What is Arthritis & Joint Pain?

Arthritis & Joint Pain – Ayurvedic treatment at Pure Aushadhi

Arthritis means inflammation or wear of the joints. Osteoarthritis — the most common type — is wear of the cartilage, usually in the knees, hips and spine, causing pain, stiffness and cracking sounds. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune condition that causes swelling, morning stiffness and pain in many joints, often the small joints of the hands.

Because these are different diseases, they need different treatment. Our Vaidyas identify the type and stage, then combine internal medicines with therapies such as Janu Basti, Patra Pinda Sweda and medicated oils to reduce pain and keep you active.

The Ayurvedic view — Sandhigata Vata / Amavata

Osteoarthritis corresponds to Sandhigata Vata — dryness and degeneration of the joint from aggravated Vata. Rheumatoid arthritis corresponds to Amavata, where Ama from weak digestion lodges in joints with Vata. Amavata is first treated by clearing Ama (often with dry fomentation), while Sandhigata Vata is treated with oils and nourishment.
