What is High Uric Acid & Gout?
Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines from food. When levels stay high, crystals can form in joints, causing gout — sudden, severe pain, redness and swelling, often in the big toe, ankle or knee. High uric acid can also contribute to kidney stones.
We treat both the acute pain and the tendency to build up uric acid, using herbs that support its elimination, a diet that limits purines, and lifestyle changes for weight and hydration.
The Ayurvedic view — Vatarakta
Gout is described as Vatarakta — a disorder where aggravated Vata and impure Rakta (blood) block each other, usually starting at the small joints of the feet. Rich food, alcohol and inactivity are classic causes. Treatment purifies the blood and calms Vata.
