What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-term, immune-driven skin condition in which skin cells multiply far faster than normal. The excess cells pile up as thick, red, silvery-scaled plaques — most often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back — and tend to flare and settle in cycles.
Steroid creams can quieten a flare, but plaques often return once they are stopped. Our approach looks at why your skin keeps flaring: digestion, stress, sleep, food combinations and family history. Medicines are then prepared for your specific presentation, so a patient with a few dry scalp patches does not receive the same prescription as someone with widespread, inflamed plaques.
The Ayurvedic view — Eka Kushtha / Kitibha
Classical texts describe psoriasis under Kushtha (skin disorders), most closely as Eka Kushtha and Kitibha. Aggravated Vata and Kapha, together with impure blood (Rakta Dushti) and accumulated Ama from weak digestion, settle in the skin layers and produce dry, thick, scaly patches. Treatment therefore works on the blood and digestion as well as on the skin surface.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Tick the symptoms you have. This quick self-check suggests which stage may apply to you. A Vaidya will confirm it during your free consultation.
This is not a diagnosis. Only a doctor can confirm your stage and the right medicine.
Get my stage confirmed — freeCauses & Triggers
- Viruddha Ahara — incompatible food combinations such as fish with milk
- Chronic stress, anxiety and disturbed sleep
- Weak digestion leading to Ama (metabolic toxins)
- Family history and immune over-activity
- Skin injury, infections or sudden withdrawal of steroids
Stages of Psoriasis & How Your Medicine Changes
We do not give every Psoriasis patient the same medicine. Your formulation, dose and therapies depend on the stage of the disease:
Early / Mild
A few small plaques or scalp scaling covering a small area; occasional itching.
Gentle blood-purifying herbs, digestive correction and a medicated oil for local application. Diet changes do much of the work at this stage.
Moderate / Chronic
Thick plaques on elbows, knees, scalp or back; regular flares; nail changes.
Stronger Rakta-shodhak formulations, internal ghee preparations and lepas prepared for your skin type, with monthly review of the dose.
Severe / Widespread
Large areas affected, cracking or bleeding, joint pain, or long steroid dependence.
Supervised Shodhana (Virechana) where suitable, followed by Shamana medicines and Rasayana, with a careful plan for tapering existing steroids alongside your physician.
